HVAC Maintenance List for the Spring: How to Ring in the New Season

Air Conditioner system next to a home

When you get your home ready for the spring, there are many things you have to take into account, including your HVAC unit. Spring is here, meaning the weather will soon be changing! It will have been a while since you’ve turned on your air conditioner, so in order to make sure it is in working condition, we discuss a few simple tasks for you to do while you prepare your home for the spring!

Clear Debris From the Outside Unit

Debris easily builds up during the fall and winter, and the spring season can only make it worse. Before starting on any other projects on your home, make sure you clean up your HVAC system. Whether you need to rake away leaves, branches, or clear out dirt, this will help your system cool without any stress.

Clear the Drainage Hole

Air conditioners are equipped with a drainage hole by the cabinet’s base. This hole can become clogged and prevent your unit from draining as needed. The drainage hole needs to be clear to make your HVAC work efficiently. Make sure you clear this up as well if the hole is clogged.

Remove Condenser Covers

Condenser covers are used to protect outdoor air conditioning units from harsh weather and debris. However, you want to remove these units when you start using your cool air. Turning the system on with a cover over the unit can severely damage the system as it will work harder than it should. If vegetation or moss is accumulating near the condenser, this will also need to be removed.

Keep Windows and Doors Closed

To the best of your ability, keep your windows and doors closed in your home. The longer you leave windows or doors open, the more your air conditioner will have to work. If you have to keep them open, turn your air conditioner off for the time being.

Replace the Air Filter

This simply cannot be stressed enough. You should already be replacing your air filters every one to three months, but if you haven’t done so, now is the time. Dust easily accumulates in the winter, and with the spring winds, it will only make it worse. If you don’t want dirt or dust circulating in your home, have your filters replaced right away.
